The ice cream vendor gave my daughter a free cone. Twenty minutes later, police officers were running straight toward us.
Our beach vacation had barely begun when my six year old daughter, Emma, spotted the little ice cream cart near the boardwalk. She begged for a cone the moment she saw it. The elderly vendor smiled warmly.
“What flavor?”
“Cotton candy,” she squealed.
As I reached for my wallet, he gently pushed my hand away. “This one’s on me.”
Emma’s eyes lit up. She thanked him, and we continued walking along the beach. It seemed like nothing more than a kind gesture. For the next twenty minutes, everything was perfect. Emma chased seagulls. Collected seashells. Laughed every time the waves touched her feet.
Then I heard shouting. At first I thought someone had gotten hurt. But when I turned around, I saw two police officers running straight toward us. People instinctively stepped aside. The officers weren’t looking at anyone else. They were looking at my daughter.
My heart nearly stopped. One officer reached us, breathing hard.
“Is this the little girl who got the free ice cream?”
I instinctively pulled Emma behind me. “Yes. Why?”
He immediately grabbed his radio. “We’ve located them.”
Located us? Before I could ask another question, more officers arrived. One of them looked toward the boardwalk.
“The vendor’s gone.”
“What do you mean, gone?” I asked.
“The cart is still there. But he disappeared.”
The crowd had started gathering around us. Nobody understood what was happening. Neither did I. Then, just as panic reached its peak, a man in a dark suit hurried across the beach. It was the resort’s general manager. He ignored everyone else and walked straight toward me. Without saying a word, he held out his phone.
