A mother thought nothing of letting a hotel waiter take her son on a ten-minute kitchen tour. Then the chef revealed that the man wasn’t an employee and ordered that every exit be locked. When her son was found beside the freezer, one object in his pocket exposed the stranger’s real plan.
My eight-year-old son, Oliver, had been obsessed with pizza since we arrived at the hotel.

“Want to make your own?” he asked.

“Can I, Mom?”

I looked at Nick.
He explained that children sometimes got quick kitchen tours when the restaurant wasn’t too busy.
“They can put toppings on a pizza, meet the cooks. Five or ten minutes.”
Oliver was already bouncing in his chair.
“Please?”
I looked toward the open kitchen.
There were at least six employees back there.
I could see chefs moving around.
