When my husband called me onto the porch that morning, I expected to see another stray animal. Instead, I found a fox carrying a message that would change everything I thought I knew about my family.
It started like any other morning.
I was standing in my kitchen, waiting for the coffee maker to finish brewing, when my husband, Ben, suddenly shouted from the front porch.
His voice was sharp enough to make me jump.
“Come here. Right now.”
At first, I thought something had happened to one of our chickens.
We lived in a small house near the edge of Blackwood Forest, and animals wandered onto our property all the time. Deer, raccoons, stray cats, and occasionally even the odd coyote.
I grabbed my coffee mug and walked toward the door.
“What is it?” I called.
Then I stepped outside.
A fox was sitting in the middle of our yard.
Not running. Not hiding.
Not acting frightened in the slightest. It simply sat there beneath the maple tree, staring directly at us. The morning sunlight painted its reddish fur gold, and its tail curled neatly around its paws.
For a strange moment, it looked less like a wild animal and more like it was waiting for something.
Ben slowly pointed. “Do you see that?”
I narrowed my eyes. At first, I couldn’t tell what he meant.
Then I noticed it.
A dark leather collar wrapped around the fox’s neck.
“What in the world…” The words died in my throat.
Attached to the collar was a small pouch.
The fox tilted its head. Watching us.
Waiting.
A chill crept up my spine.
“That’s not normal,” Ben said quietly.
“No kidding.”
Neither of us moved.
The entire situation felt wrong in a way I couldn’t explain. Finally, Ben took a cautious step forward.
The fox remained perfectly still.
Another step and still nothing. I found myself holding my breath.
“Why isn’t it running?” I whispered.
“I have no idea.”
