‘Your parents sold your car. Family comes fi…

I worked on my birthday. My mom texted, “We sold your car. Family comes first.

Thanks for being flexible while you stay here.”

Then she added, “Oh, and your brother’s starting college. We’re hoping you can help with his first semester. $6,000 due this week.”

I said, “No.”

My dad said loudly, “Pack your things.

We need you to move out.”

So I did. And I left something behind. And the next morning, the syrup wouldn’t come off.

I was scrubbing the same spot on the café counter for the third time when my phone buzzed against my apron pocket. 6:47 p.m. Still four hours left on my double shift.

My hands were sticky, my lower back was screaming, and somewhere in the dining room, a toddler was systematically dismantling a blueberry muffin onto the floor I’d just mopped. Happy birthday to me. I pulled out my phone, expecting a message from Jenna.

She’d promised to swing by after close with cupcakes and a bottle of cheap wine. Instead, I saw Mom’s name on the screen. “We sold your car.

Family comes first. Be grateful we let you live here.”

I read it three times. The words didn’t change.

Two years. Seven hundred thirty-one days of 5 a.m. alarm clocks, of smelling like coffee grounds and maple syrup, of telling myself, one more month, almost there, it’ll be worth it.

My 2019 Honda Civic, paid for in cash. Every penny earned pouring lattes, clearing plates, and smiling at customers who snapped their fingers at me like I was a golden retriever. Gone in one text message.

My phone buzzed again. “Your brother’s starting college. You’ll cover his first semester.

$6,000 due this week.”

I stared at the screen until the letters blurred. My manager, Derek, walked past and asked if I was okay. I must have nodded, because he kept walking.

$6,000. Like I had it sitting in a drawer somewhere. Like I hadn’t just lost my only asset, my transportation, my freedom, my proof that I could build something for myself.
