What I Left Behind
Let me tell you what was in the folder.
I had been twenty three years old for eleven hours and I was sitting on Jenna’s couch with my laptop on my knees and the cheap candle smell in the air and the leftover takeout smell underneath it, and I was opening a folder I had not touched in three months.
The folder was labeled Admin.
Inside it were the documents that related to my family’s various accounts, subscriptions, and services that I had been managing for approximately four years. I had started managing them when my parents got their first smartphone and could not figure out how to set up a Netflix account, and it had grown from there in the specific way that these things grow when you are the competent one in a family that relies on the competent one and does not think about what happens when the competent one leaves.
Let me inventory what I had been managing.
I had set up and maintained the family’s streaming services. Three of them: the one with the movies, the one with the television shows my mom liked, and the one my brother used for music. All three accounts were in my name, linked to my email address and my debit card.
I had managed the family’s phone plan. Four lines, family plan, twenty two percent discount for setting up autopay. The autopay was linked to my debit card. My name was the account holder because I had negotiated the plan when my parents upgraded two years ago and had been the one to deal with the carrier.
I had set up and maintained the family’s internet service. My name was on the account because I had been home when the technician came and my parents had been at work. My debit card was on autopay.
