I Renovated My Late Mother’s Cottage in Silence—Then Came Home to Find My Niece Had Moved In
The text came in at 10:17 on a Tuesday night.
I was watching the news from the guest bedroom of an old coworker’s house in Asheville, North Carolina. My reading glasses were still perched on my nose, and half a mug of chamomile tea had gone cold on the nightstand.
The name on my phone was Mrs. Puit, my neighbor from three doors down.
Her message contained six words:
“Lights on at your place. Someone’s inside.”
I read it twice, then a third time.
At first, I tried to explain it away. Maybe one of the motion sensors had not been recalibrated properly. Maybe headlights from the street had reflected against a window.
“Are you sure?” I typed. “Maybe it’s the porch light.”
Her response arrived in less than a minute.
“No. Living room. I can see movement through the window.”
My hands did not shake. That surprised me. They simply went very still as I opened the security app connected to the cameras I had installed two months earlier.
The feed took several seconds to load.
Then the living room of my cottage appeared on the screen.
It was the room I had repainted with my own two hands the previous spring. The room where I had finally hung the watercolor my late husband bought for me on our anniversary in 1995.
And it was full of people.
Not strangers.
Worse than strangers.
My niece stood in the middle of the floor with her hands on her hips, giving instructions to her husband.
Their boxes were stacked against the far wall. I could see the handwritten labels on the masking tape. Two boxes had already been opened.
