“My Mother Wants You Alone Tonight,” My Fiancé Tex…

55

My fiancé sent me a message one day before the wedding: “My mother invited you to dinner tonight.”

At the end of the dinner, my future mother-in-law said something in Italian to my fiancé, and they both laughed. I stayed calm, smiled, held her hand, and then I spoke in perfect Italian. The message arrived at 11:22 on a Tuesday night, the night before my wedding.

I was sitting on the edge of the hotel bed in my white robe, a glass of prosecco leaving a slow ring of condensation on the nightstand, my phone resting on my knee. My sister Daniela was asleep across the room, breathing the deep, even rhythm of someone who had no reason to be anything but at peace. The dress hung on the back of the bathroom door in its garment bag, heavy and white and real, and the whole room smelled of the gardenias Marcus had sent with a card that said, “Tomorrow I get to call you my wife.”

Then the message came through.

Just one line. My mother is hosting dinner tomorrow evening before the rehearsal. Family tradition.

She’d love for you to be there. Come alone. I stared at the screen long enough that it dimmed and I had to touch it to wake it again.

Come alone. To Juliana Ferretti’s house, the night before my wedding. Without Daniela.

Without my friends. Without anyone from my side of anything. Just me and his mother and whatever she had decided she needed to say to me before I officially became part of her family.

I set the phone face down on the nightstand beside the gardenia card. I was thirty-two years old, the night before I was supposed to become his wife. I had spent two years sitting at Juliana’s table.

Two years smiling at conversations I was excluded from. Two years adding to a private folder in the back of my mind that had grown heavy enough to keep me awake. And sitting on that hotel bed with the wedding dress behind me, I felt something settle in my chest with the quiet certainty of a key turning in a lock it was made for.
