Nothing about the shopping trip seemed unusual until Emma came home quieter than she had left. By the end of the evening, I realized someone had placed a fear inside her that did not belong there.
I let my mother-in-law, Anna, take my 13-year-old daughter, Emma, shopping.
I thought it would be a fun bonding activity for them.
Anna had been asking for months.
“Just the two of us,” she would say. “Emma deserves a girls’ day.”
Anna had taken Emma for lunch before, bought her birthday gifts, and attended every school concert since kindergarten.
Still, when Anna pulled out of our driveway that Saturday morning, I stood at the window longer than necessary.
I could not explain the uneasy feeling in my chest.

Emma climbed out carrying four shopping bags.
“Did you have fun?” I called.

Emma carried every bag upstairs and disappeared into her room without showing me a single item.
That was strange.
Whenever Emma bought new clothes, she usually modeled everything immediately, even if the only thing she had purchased was a pair of socks.
I told myself she was tired.
Emma sat at the table, looked down at her plate, and quietly pushed it away.
“I’m not hungry.”
Her father, Rick, glanced at her.
“You’re still full from lunch?”
Emma shrugged.
She left after taking only two bites.
Rick watched her go.
