I was bursting with pride watching my Lana finally graduate high school. The ceremony was perfect until one of her classmates grabbed the microphone and said something that turned our happiest day into my worst nightmare. Something I never could have imagined in a million years.
Richard and I had been counting down to this day for months.
Maybe even more than Lana herself.
We’d planned every detail of her graduation day like it was our wedding.
We got her a beautiful emerald green dress that made her eyes sparkle and those strappy heels she’d been eyeing for weeks. Even her hair appointment was booked two months in advance.
“Can you believe our baby is graduating?” I kept asking Richard during those final weeks. He’d just smile and shake his head like he couldn’t quite wrap his mind around it either.
Lana was the center of our universe.
Our only child. We’d tried for years to have another baby, but it never happened.
So all our love, all our dreams, and all our hopes got poured into this one amazing girl. Watching her walk across that stage was going to be the proudest moment of our lives.
We arrived at the school an hour early.
The parking lot was already packed with families clutching bouquets and cameras. Everyone had the same excited energy buzzing around them.
“We did it,” Richard kept saying as we walked toward the gym. “Can you believe she’s actually graduating?
Our little girl.”
I squeezed his hand. “I know. It feels like yesterday she was learning to ride her bike.”
We found our seats in the third row.
The whole gym was decorated with blue and gold streamers. Balloons bobbed from every chair. A huge banner read “Congratulations Class of 2025!” in glittery letters.
When the ceremony started, it was absolutely beautiful.
The room was filled with proud parents cheering for their kids.
Every time a name was called, someone’s family would erupt in applause. I had tears in my eyes before they even got to the L’s.
The story doesn’t end here — it continues on the next page.
