I THOUGHT OUR BABYSITTER HAD SNUCK A STRANGER INTO OUR HOUSE—BUT THE TRUTH CHANGED EVERYTHING

79

I still remember the exact moment my stomach dropped. Late one night, I was half-watching the nanny cam on my phone while answering emails when I noticed movement near the living room window. At first, I thought the footage had glitched.

Then I watched the window slowly slide open and saw a shadow climb inside my house. My heart started pounding. My children were asleep upstairs, and our teenage babysitter, Lily, was supposed to be watching them while my husband and I were away overnight.

I rewound the footage again and again, feeling my anger grow stronger each time. Lily looked nervously over her shoulder before helping the stranger through the window, whispering urgently while handing him a towel before locking the window behind them. By morning, I had already decided she was fired.

All I could think was that she had brought a stranger into my home while my children slept only a few feet away. When Lily arrived the next morning, she looked exhausted, like she already knew what was coming. I told her to sit down and explained that I had seen the nanny cam footage.

The second I mentioned the stranger, she burst into tears so hard she could barely breathe. Through sobs, she begged me not to fire her and admitted immediately that she had let someone into the house. Then she whispered something that stopped me cold: “That was my little brother.” She explained that he was sixteen and had been kicked out by their father two weeks earlier with nowhere to go.

He had been sleeping in his car ever since. Lily had been secretly bringing him food and letting him shower at our house whenever we were gone because she didn’t know what else to do. She said she was terrified I would fire her if I found out, and then she wouldn’t even be able to help him survive.

The anger I had carried all night disappeared instantly. In its place came something heavier. I looked at my own children asleep safely upstairs and imagined a sixteen-year-old boy trying to survive alone in a parking lot.
