The woman in the charcoal suit didn’t hesitate for even a second.
She walked straight through the center of the restaurant with the confidence of someone who already knew exactly how ugly the next few minutes were about to become. Behind her, the man with the badge scanned the room carefully while the other carried a thick leather portfolio pressed tightly against his chest.
Meanwhile, my husband was still laughing.
Still touching Vanessa’s hand across the candlelit table.
Still completely unaware his entire world was seconds away from collapsing.
Daniel stepped slightly behind me and murmured, “This started as an affair investigation. It became something much bigger.”
I barely heard him.
My heart was pounding too hard.
The woman stopped directly beside Andrew’s table.
“Andrew Bennett?” she asked calmly.
My husband looked up, mildly annoyed at the interruption.
“Yes?”
“My name is Claire Whitmore. Senior Corporate Compliance Investigator for Axion Financial.”
The smile vanished from his face instantly.
Vanessa pulled her hand away from his.
Claire placed the leather portfolio on the table with terrifying calm.
“We need to discuss the unauthorized transfers linked to the Horizon accounts.”
For a second, Andrew just stared at her.
Then I watched all the color drain from his face.
Not guilt from cheating.
Fear.
Real fear.
Vanessa looked between them nervously. “Andrew… what is she talking about?”
Claire opened the portfolio and removed several printed documents.
“Over the last fourteen months,” she said evenly, “company funds were redirected through multiple shell vendors connected to a private consulting firm registered under your wife’s name.”
My stomach dropped.
“My wife?” Vanessa whispered.
Claire turned toward her.
“Vanessa Mercer Consulting LLC.”
Daniel closed his eyes briefly beside me like hearing the words out loud still physically hurt.
