The house had been described to me, before I ever stepped inside it, as spacious.
My husband Nathan used this word three times in the conversation where he laid out the plan, spacious, and I noted each use because Nathan is not a person who repeats words unless he is trying to accomplish something with repetition, trying to make a thing feel true by saying it enough. The house had four bedrooms, he said. The spare room was upstairs and it was large, larger than our apartment’s bedroom by a meaningful margin, and his parents were happy to have us, and it was a good plan, a practical plan, and eight or ten months would pass faster than I thought.
I said yes.
I said yes because the math was correct, which was the part I understood well. We had been paying rent on a one-bedroom in a city where one-bedrooms cost what they cost, which was considerably more than they should, and after three years of this we had saved eleven thousand dollars, which was real money and also not enough money for a down payment on anything in a market that had not been reasonable since approximately 2018. The plan was to bank almost everything we earned for eight months while living in the spare room and emerge in late fall or early winter with something that could actually meet a seller’s conditions.
I understood the math.
What I was less prepared for was the sociology.
Dan and Karen Whitfield had been in the house on Clement Avenue for twenty-six years. Dan was sixty-three.
