I gave my boyfriend everything, only to end up freezing on a dark road while my daughter collapsed in the snow. But when a pair of headlights cut through the night, the man who stepped out of the vehicle was the last person I ever expected to see again.
I grew up in a tiny Texas town where everyone knew everyone.
My family was poor, surviving on tight budgets, long walks to school and work, and all the while doing two to three jobs.
While all this was happening, I had a world of my own.
I loved drawing dresses from the time I was a little girl.
Every blank piece of paper I could find became a canvas for flowing gowns, sharp hemlines, and vibrant fabrics.
Yet, poverty seemed to hinder me from this dream.
Instead, I waited on tables, drawing on napkins during lean hours, and manned a convenience store during the graveyard shift.
At 19, I met Tyler.
He was dining at the restaurant where I worked, and he ordered the most expensive thing on the menu.
It turned out he was the handsome son of one of the richest Texan families that owned a massive oil company.
He struck up a conversation during my shift, and I could feel myself gravitating toward him.
By the end of his meal, he slipped a pen on the table and asked me to write my phone number on a napkin.
I hesitated at first, but I could not get over his looks.
He looked straight out of a movie.
I obliged.
We spoke all week long whenever I had time.
Months later, I found out I was pregnant.
I was terrified. “How am I supposed to raise a child at 20?” I thought to myself.
Despite this, I was confident everything would be okay because when I revealed the pregnancy to Tyler, he held my hands tightly and gave me a promise that made me believe everything would be fine.
I held on to that hope and had an easy pregnancy.
