After ten years in prison, the man was finally free. He had been accused of taking the life of an innocent person. But he kept insisting that he hadn’t done it.
He said he was innocent, yet no one believed him. All the evidence pointed against him — his fingerprints were found at the scene. After his release, he didn’t return to his hometown, since his family had long turned their backs on him.
Instead, he bought a small house by the river, raised chickens, planted potatoes, and lived quietly. The villagers avoided him and were afraid of him. Some didn’t even greet him; others crossed the street when they saw him.
