The Treasurer Who Called Me a Thief

I had counted the Sunday offering at my church for thirty years when a man who had been our treasurer for less than eight months stood up during the announcements and told the whole congregation that I was a thief.

My name is Bernice, and I am seventy two years old. I live two miles outside Cedar Fork, Missouri, on the same gravel road my husband Dewitt and I moved onto the year we married, and for thirty years, every single Sunday after the second service let out, I have sat at the same folding table in the back counting room of Cedar Fork Christian Church with two other people, sorting bills, stacking coins, and writing the total on a sign-off sheet that all three of us signed before it ever left the room. I was not raised to expect a public accusation from a man I had known less than a year. I was not raised to expect much of anything to happen to me at all, which is, I have come to understand, its own kind of blindness, because it means you never build the armor you might one day need.

I need to tell you how I got to that folding table in the first place, because the thirty years matter. They are the whole reason what happened next cut as deep as it did.

Dewitt and I bought our place the spring after we married, forty acres of hill ground that grew rocks better than it grew corn, and we ran cattle on it for forty six years until his heart gave out in the barn on a January morning seven years ago. We joined Cedar Fork Christian the same month we moved to the county, back when it was still called Cedar Fork Community Chapel and met in a cinder block building with a wood stove in the corner that Pastor Emmett Ross fed by hand through the winter services. I started on the count team the year our daughter Alta turned nine, when the woman who had counted the offering for as long as anyone could remember, a widow named Thora Vance, no relation to anyone in this story that I knew of at the time, asked me after church one Sunday if I would learn the job because her eyes were failing and she needed someone steady to take it over.
