I thought my tenants had simply destroyed my backyard without permission. Then I found something buried beneath the dirt, and the way they reacted told me the hole was never really about a pool.
My name is Linda, and I own a rental property which I leased to a young couple.
They seemed perfectly normal when they signed the agreement six months ago.
One weekend, I drove over to drop off a maintenance notice and nearly ran off the road when I saw the backyard.
It had a massive hole in it that was roughly 15 feet across and at least five feet deep, with dirt piled in mounds along the fence line like something out of a construction site.
There had been no permit, no phone call, and not even a text message asking if this might possibly be okay with me.
For a few seconds, I simply sat behind the wheel and stared.
Then, I parked so quickly that one tire bumped the curb.
I marched up the front walk with the maintenance notice crushed in my hand and knocked hard enough to hurt my knuckles.
Brent, one of my tenants, answered the door.
He was a man in his early 30s who had always been polite whenever we spoke.
His wife, Kayla, usually handled the rent payments and occasional maintenance questions.
Brent smiled at me as though I had stopped by for coffee.
“Linda, hey.”
I pointed toward the side yard.
“What happened to my backyard?”
His expression shifted, but only slightly.
“Oh, that.”
“Yes, Brent, that.”
Kayla appeared behind him, and the nervous look on her face immediately told me that at least one of them understood how outrageous this was.
