My Son-in-Law Charged Me for Staying in His House While I Helped With the Baby, but He Regretted It Soon After

My name is Mary. I’m 61, and when my daughter Casey had her first baby, I drove four hours to stay with them for two weeks.

Derek, my son-in-law, met me in the driveway before I’d even turned off the engine.

“Give me that,” he said, grabbing my suitcase. “You drove four hours. You’re not carrying anything.”

That was Derek. In the six years he’d been with Casey, he’d always been kind to me. He remembered my birthday, called me “Mom” sometimes, and whenever I visited, he made me feel welcome.

So when I walked into their house and saw him exhausted, Casey barely holding herself together, and my tiny grandson asleep against her chest, I didn’t need anyone to ask me to help.

The first few days were rough. Casey was barely sleeping, and Derek had already gone back to work.

I cooked dinner, threw in laundry, cleaned whenever I could, and took some of the night feedings so Casey could sleep.

“What’s wrong, honey?”

She hugged me.

“Nothing. I’m just so tired. Mom, I don’t know what we’d do without you.”

I held her for a second.

“That’s what moms are for.”

And I meant it.

By the end of those two weeks, my back hurt, and I was ready for my own bed. But I’d do it all again.

On my last morning, Casey hugged me before taking the baby upstairs.

“Thank you for everything, Mom. Seriously.”

Then she laughed.

“Next time you visit, you’re not doing a thing.”

I watched her disappear upstairs with the baby.

A minute later, Derek walked into the kitchen and placed a piece of paper in front of me.
