My Son Blocked the Road to My Home and Demanded My Land, but He Forgot About the Hidden Phone

What Margaret Knew

The coffee was still hot when my son told me he wasn’t moving the truck.

I want to start there, with the coffee, because it is the kind of detail that tells you something true about how the morning began. I had woken at six the way I have woken at six for forty years, made one cup in the kitchen with the particular ritual that has become more meaningful since I have been making it for one person instead of two, and carried it to the porch to watch the Tennessee hills come into their morning color. This is what I do now. It is not everything I once had but it is something real, and I have learned to hold real things carefully.

Michael’s truck was blocking my driveway when I came outside.

Not his truck. A concrete mixer, industrial, heavy, positioned sideways across the gravel with the precision of someone who had thought about the geometry in advance. Its front bumper sat near the embankment. Its rear wheels touched the tree line. The road off my property runs one direction only, and that direction was sealed.

Michael was standing beside it in a navy business suit.

I have a photograph in the hallway of Michael at eight years old standing in this same driveway in mud-covered overalls with a gap-toothed smile and a bullfrog he had caught in the creek, holding it up for the camera with the particular pride of a child who has accomplished something he considers significant. I thought about that photograph while I looked at him in his suit beside his truck, and I thought about the distance between those two versions of my son, and I felt something that was grief and also something harder than grief.
