Six days after my son and I left for a trip we take every June, we walked back into our own house and found his bedroom stripped to the carpet, with the dents of his bunk bed still pressed into it like footprints.

My sister stood in the doorway of that empty room and laughed.

She said she took the room, sold everything, and got a good price.

My mother chuckled behind her and said my sister was pregnant, so it was only fair.

My son held on to my shirt and cried into it, and I said nothing at all.

I just walked away.
