My name is Ava Thompson. I’m 23 years old and this is the story of how I disappeared from my family so I could finally be seen.

I could feel the joy. It was thick in the air, a heavy, warm blanket for everyone but me. I sat in my designated row on the field, my black gown sticking to my skin in the humid Minnesota summer air.
My cap felt tight on my head. I kept adjusting the tassel, running my fingers over the silky threads. I tried to focus on the speaker at the podium, a man with a kind face talking about futures and opportunities, but his words were just a dull buzz.
My eyes kept darting to one spot in the stands. Section 104, row 22, seats 12, 13, and 14. They were empty.
Three stark blue plastic seats. An ugly gaping hole in the middle of a celebration. My seats, the ones I had reserved for my mom, my dad, and my sister Brooke.
I had sent them a picture of the tickets weeks ago. I’d called them the night before, my voice buzzing with an excitement I rarely let myself show. “Big day tomorrow,” I’d said.
“We know, sweetie. We’ll be there,” Mom had promised. “Wouldn’t miss it for the world.”
But the world, it turned out, was very small.
It was the size of my sister’s latest crisis. I pulled my phone out from the deep pocket of my gown, my hands trembling slightly. Maybe they were just late.
