The First of the Month
The wind off the Maine coast in October is not polite about it. It comes in flat and direct, the kind of cold that finds the gaps in whatever you are wearing and settles there, and I was standing in a frozen parking lot in a wedding dress that had not been designed for the climate, holding my phone with both hands because my fingers had gone stiff, waiting for my mother to say something that would make the preceding thirty-two years make sense.
She didn’t.
The call connected and I heard music immediately, loud and celebratory, women’s voices overlapping, the particular acoustic signature of a party in full swing. Someone was yelling about a cake. Glasses were clinking. My sister’s gender reveal was exactly as festive as my mother had hoped it would be.
“Mom,” I said.
A pause. The irritated pause of someone who has been interrupted during the good part.
“What?”
I looked back at the barn. Through the old wooden doors I could see the yellow string lights Garrett had spent two Saturdays hanging, and the shapes of the people inside, the medics and soldiers and nurses who had showed up on a cold Saturday in October because they wanted to be there, because they had chosen to be there, which is the distinction I keep returning to.
“I just took my vows,” I said.
The line crackled. Someone laughed in the background, a bright, uncomplicated laugh.
Then my mother said five words.
“Do not bother us.”
Click.
I stood in the parking lot for four minutes. I know it was four minutes because I was looking at my phone and the call had ended and the screen was showing the time and I watched it change twice before I moved. The cold was doing what it does. The dress was doing nothing to help. Inside the barn, my husband was waiting, which was a sentence I was still getting used to, my husband, and my grandmother Ruth was in her wool coat in the front row chair, the one chair in the front row that had not been empty, and there was a reception happening with people who had come on purpose.
