At the time, I laughed. Now those words settled somewhere heavy inside me.
“I’ll be there,” I whispered.
Friday arrived beneath a gray sky, and more than two hundred people filled the church for my father’s funeral. Former employees from Hail Mechanical stood beside neighbors, cousins, longtime friends, and people I had never met. Many had stories about Dad helping them repair a furnace during a difficult winter or quietly helping a family with a heating bill.
That day, I realized my father had built more than a successful business. He had built relationships that lasted.
Mark, my husband, played the grieving son-in-law perfectly. He shook hands, carried flowers, and stayed beside me whenever someone offered a hug. From the outside, he looked like the supportive husband anyone would want.
But I noticed something else.
Twice, he leaned toward me and quietly asked, “Did Samuel say when the will is being read?”
I pretended not to hear.
After the burial, everyone gathered at Dad’s house for coffee and sandwiches. Melissa, Mark’s sister, walked through the rooms with unusual confidence.
“I forgot how nice this place is,” she said.
Diane, Mark’s mother, stood near the living-room window.
“If Clare sells, this neighborhood won’t stay available long.”
They did not realize I had heard them.
Mark eventually slipped an arm around my shoulders.
“You okay?”
“I’m tired.”
“Just one more day,” he said. “Tomorrow we’ll finally know everything.”
But to me, tomorrow wasn’t about money. It was about hearing my father’s voice one last time through whatever he had left behind.
