My Husband Made Me Host His Birthday With A Broken Leg Until His Mother Stepped In

The first thing my husband asked, when he came running in from the pool, was whether the cake was ruined.

Not whether I had hurt my broken leg again. Not whether I needed help getting up. She had reminded me, gently, that he had grown up in a house where things were done a certain way, that he loved me in his own manner, that men of his generation and his father’s generation simply hadn’t been taught. She had spent more than a decade holding the umbrella of her own excuses over her son’s head, keeping him dry.
