I was stunned when I spotted my girlfriend wearing the engagement ring I hadn’t even proposed with, but the real shocker came when she handed me an invitation to my own wedding! Confused and hurt by her audacity, I devised a bold test to uncover whether Everly truly loved me. Everly and I were having dinner at my parents’ place when I noticed it.
My pulse picked up and my jaw dropped. She was wearing the engagement ring I had bought three months ago, even though I hadn’t proposed yet! “Where did you get that?” I asked, grabbing her wrist.
Everly blushed. “Oh, the ring?” she raised her hand and wiggled her finger. “I accidentally found it while dusting your drawer.”
“Oh?” My voice was barely a whisper, disbelief threatening to strangle me.
“You found it accidentally in a LOCKED drawer?”
She shrugged, the casual kind of shrug that usually came with her taking my last fry, not with something this serious. “Yeah, kind of…” Her eyes flickered with excitement, not even a hint of regret in sight. “But hon, don’t worry!
I do! I’ve already chosen the venue with our moms, picked the cake, and even bought my wedding dress. Everything is set.”
I sat there, rooted in place, unable to form a coherent thought, let alone a sentence.
“And here,” she added, fishing something out of her purse, “your invitation!”
The small, elegant card felt heavy in my hand. I opened it, eyes skimming over the words that confirmed our wedding was set for five days from now. Five.
Days! My name was on there, in glossy gold letters, and all I could think was, how had I become a guest at my own wedding? I took a deep breath, trying to calm the storm brewing inside.
“When exactly were you planning on telling me about all of this?”
Everly waved a hand dismissively as if I were fussing over a minor detail. “Oh, I didn’t want to stress you out. Just show up in your suit, and we’ll have a beautiful day.”
I didn’t know whether to scream or laugh at the absurdity of it all.
Show up in my suit? Was this what marriage meant to her? That I’d just coast through, playing the role of the groom in her dream wedding?
There’d been red flags before in our relationship, moments where I’d wondered if marrying Everly was the right move. That’s why I hadn’t proposed yet. Everly’s enthusiasm was always there, but sometimes, I felt like she was more in love with the idea of a wedding than the idea of us.
