My Daughter In Law Announced She Was Moving In Until I Opened The Folder

My mother called me the night before my wedding to tell me she had changed her mind about coming.

I was sitting on the edge of the hotel bed with my veil hanging on the closet door and my bridesmaids in the next room doing whatever bridesmaids do the night before a wedding, which in this case involved wine and a card game I had not been paying enough attention to follow. “He takes you away from us,” she said.

“Mom,” I said. “I moved to Portland three years ago. That was my choice. James didn’t move me anywhere.”

“You changed when you met him,” she said.

“I grew up,” I said.

She did not respond immediately.

I looked at the bathroom ceiling. Through the wall I could hear my best friend Cara’s laugh, the particular one she made when she was winning at something, and I held onto that sound while I waited for my mother to say the next thing.

“I love you,” she said. “But I can’t watch you make this mistake.”

“It’s not a mistake,” I said.
