The red wristband made a small, cheap snapping sound when my brother fastened it around my wrist, but somehow that sound cut through everything: the low jazz drifting from hidden rooftop speakers, the polished laughter of people holding champagne glasses, the clink of silver tongs against trays of seared scallops, and the city wind brushing against the glass railings twelve stories above downtown. It should have been nothing. Just plastic biting into skin.
Just another party detail in a night designed to celebrate someone else. But the instant it closed around me, I felt twenty-nine years of being pushed aside tighten with it. My brother Derek did not even have the decency to look uncomfortable.
He stood behind the check-in table in his navy suit, one hand holding his phone and the other already reaching for the next white wristband. “Security needs to know who doesn’t belong here,” he said, as casually as if he were explaining where to put coats. Behind me, a line of guests fell quiet just long enough for the words to land, and in that silence I understood something with absolute clarity: my family had not invited me to celebrate Derek.
They had invited me so everyone could see where I belonged. Around me, guests were being handed white bands with gold lettering. White meant VIP.
White meant important. White meant family, professional contacts, mentors, investors, anyone Derek believed might make him look more impressive by standing near him. Red, apparently, meant me.
I was Derek’s older sister, Elena Marsh, twenty-nine years old, present but not honored, related but not included, visible only when humiliation required an audience. I could have taken the wristband off in that moment. I could have told him exactly who owned the floor beneath his polished shoes, the bar behind him, the elevator that had brought his guests upstairs, the roof itself, the building itself, the entire Skyline Tower from the retail lobby to the HVAC units above us.
