Gerald was hovering over her with a wet flannel, looking completely overwhelmed. Brenda was coming around, her eyes fluttering open, but she looked smaller than I’d ever seen her. She wasn’t the fiery, demanding woman who had screamed at us on our porch.

Now, our house is open to her, and the pantry remains exactly as I left it. She doesn’t come over to snoop; she comes over to have tea and watch the birds in the garden with us. The key sits on her kitchen counter, a symbol of trust that she no longer feels the desperate need to use.
We are a family again, not because we followed the rules, but because we finally understood the heart behind the madness. Life taught me that the people who push our buttons the most are usually the ones whose own buttons are stuck. If we respond to anger with more anger, we just build more walls.
