I thought my hospital stay would test my patience, not my marriage. Then one small comment from a nurse made me question where my husband had really been spending his time. What I uncovered forced me to revisit an old family wound I thought had healed years ago.
The first thing that scared me wasn’t hearing that my husband had been coming to the hospital every day.
It was realizing he had been lying about where he was.
I’d been recovering from a hysterectomy for almost a week when Nurse Adams came into my room to check my IV.
By then, my world had become very small: pain medication, short walks, and me insisting, “I’m fine,” because I hated sounding helpless.
I’d been recovering from a hysterectomy.
David, my husband of 16 years, had visited twice.
I hadn’t complained.
He ran a small accounting office, and I knew he was busy. Or, at least, that was what I kept telling myself.
Nurse Adams adjusted the tubing beside my bed and nodded toward the flowers near my window.
“You’ve got a good husband, Mila.”
That was what I kept telling myself.
I smiled. “Depends on the day.”
She laughed.
“No, I mean it. He’s here all the time.”
My smile faded.
“What?”
“Depends on the day.”
“Your husband. David. I see him almost every day, honey.”
I stared at her.
“David was here on Tuesday. Before that, I think it was Saturday.”
Her hand stopped.
“Oh.”
I stared at her.
“Are you sure?”
Nurse Adams frowned. “Tall, gray hair, navy jacket?”
My stomach tightened. David had worn that jacket for years.
“That’s him.”
“Maybe I’m getting the days mixed up.”
“Did you see him today?”
