My Husband Said, “Apologize or Leave.” I Bought a One-Way Ticket—When His Family Learned Where I Went…
Part One
The last thing my husband said before I walked out of his family reunion was:
“You have two options, Diane. Apologize or leave.”
So I left.
I wish I could say I walked away with my head held high and a clear plan in mind. I didn’t. My hands shook so badly that I dropped my car keys twice before I reached the parking lot.
It was a Saturday afternoon in Bloomington, Indiana, and the Parker family reunion was being held beside Griffy Lake. The picnic tables were crowded with paper plates, potato salad, baked beans, and the peach cobbler I had gotten up at six that morning to make.
I had been married to Rob for thirty-one years—long enough to know when his family was annoyed with me, and long enough to recognize when I was expected to smile, remain quiet, and let an insult roll off my back.

It started with Rob’s younger sister, Linda. She was sitting across from me, picking at her food with a plastic fork while talking about their mother’s house.
“You know, Mom needs someone to start handling things,” she said. “She’s getting older.”
Their mother, Evelyn, was eighty-five. She was still sharp, still lived in her own house, and still drove her Buick to the grocery store twice a week.
“Mom can decide what she wants,” I said.
Linda looked directly at me.
“I wasn’t talking to you, Diane.”
I set down my fork.
“Then who were you talking to?”
She smiled, but there was nothing friendly in it.
