People Always Leave Evidence

Mildred reached into her uniform pocket and produced a folded piece of paper.

She had taken it from the lavatory.

She told me this as she handed it to me: she had gone into the forward lavatory between my boarding and her first approach to me, and she had found it wedged behind the paper towel dispenser, folded in thirds, the kind of folded-in-thirds that suggests someone tucked it there quickly without thinking carefully about where it would be found.

“Someone left it or hid it,” she said. “I read enough to understand you were the Francis in it.”

She was thirty eight or so, with the steady hands of someone who has been trained to be calm in emergencies, but her hands were not quite steady now. Her name tag said Mildred but she told me her name was actually Millie, short for Millicent, and that Mildred was the formal version she used on the tag because the airline required it.

I told her my name was Francis. I had been Francis my entire life, never Frank, despite what people assumed.

She said: “I know. It’s in the paper.”

I opened it.

It was a printed document, not handwritten. Two pages, folded to fit.

The header on the first page said: Coastal Palms Resort, Miami Beach. It was a reservation confirmation.

For two people.

Christopher Wilson and Edith Wilson.

Five nights, June 14 to 19.

One room.

Beneath the reservation confirmation, there was a second document that had been printed and stapled to the first. This one was not a hotel confirmation.

It was an email thread, printed from a phone, the formatting slightly compressed the way emails look when you print them from a mobile application.
