In my sixties, I finally did something everyone said was pointless, even if it cost me my family’s approval. But when I came home on the happiest day I’d had in years, I found something waiting that made my stomach drop.
I nearly hit the truck in my driveway.
Its rear doors were wide open, and two men were carrying things through my front door.
Then I saw my sons.
David stood on my lawn with a clipboard, while Ryan pointed toward the side of my house.
My foot slammed on the brake.
Neither of them had called me in years.
Now, on the day I graduated from college at 68, they were standing outside my home with strangers.
I got out of the car.
“What are you doing here?”
David turned, and his face changed.
“Dad.”
“Don’t ‘Dad’ me. What is going on?”
Ryan stepped toward me.
“We weren’t expecting you this early.”
My stomach tightened.
“Clearly.”
One of the men emerged carrying a folded table.
I pointed at him.
“Why is he taking things out of my house?”
“He’s bringing things in,” Ryan said quickly. “We’re moving some furniture around.”
“For what?”
Neither answered.
I pushed past them.
“Dad, wait,” David called.
I turned.
“You ignored my birthdays. You ignored Christmas. You haven’t spoken to me in years. Now, you show up at my house without permission with a truck?”
David lowered his eyes.
“We know how this looks.”
“No, I don’t think you do.”
Inside, my living room was barely recognizable.
The coffee table had been pushed against the wall.
Chairs were missing.
Boxes and folded tables crowded the hallway.
Even the photographs on my mantel were gone.
“What did you do?”
