What Mr. Vance Knew
I should tell you about the neighborhood before I tell you about the envelope.
We moved to Clairmont Street when Noah was nine years old, which was three years before he noticed Mr. Vance at all, and five years after his father left. The house was a two-bedroom rental that I chose because the elementary school was good and the street was quiet and the monthly payment was within the range of what a third-grade teacher’s salary could sustain if I was careful, which I was always careful, because I had been careful about money since the year Noah was born and I found myself doing all the calculating alone.
The street was the kind of street where people wave from cars and help carry grocery bags and show up with casseroles when someone has surgery, but where the daily rhythms of individual houses remain essentially private. You know the broad facts of your neighbors’ lives: who has a dog, who leaves for work early, whose children are what age and in what school. The specific texture of a person’s days, what they carry and what they have lost and how they fill the hours that have no external obligation: that remains interior, known only by those inside it.
Mr. Vance was the man across the street who sat on his porch.
His full name was Harold Vance, which I learned later. When we moved in he was already a widower; his wife Dorothy had died the previous winter, and the neighborhood consensus, delivered to me over backyard fences in my first month on the street, was that he had not been quite the same since. He had a son and a daughter, both grown, both living in other cities, both in contact but not frequent visitors. He had retired from something in engineering, fifteen or twenty years earlier, and had spent his retirement in the way of a man whose primary partner in life is no longer present: getting through the days.
