My sister called me a gold digger at my own engagement party, and everyone heard her.
She said it in the kitchen, which had been filling and emptying all evening with people getting drinks and setting down plates and having the half-conversations that happen at parties where the rooms are too small for the gathering. She said it to our cousin Becca while I was standing around the corner in the hallway, just returned from the backyard where I had been talking to my future mother-in-law, close enough to hear every word through the gap in the doorframe.
“She’s a gold digger,” Haley said. “I know my sister. She’s always been like this. Find the richest man in the room and lock it down.”
Becca said something I could not hear.
“No, seriously,” Haley said, louder, with the ease of someone who has had two drinks and believes the room she is in is smaller than it is. “Marcus is worth what, two million? Three? She’s been after that since day one. She doesn’t love him. She loves his portfolio.”
I stood in the hallway with a glass of sparkling water in one hand and my engagement ring catching the light from the kitchen, and I thought about all the things I could do.
I could walk in and confront her.
I could find Marcus and tell him what I had heard.
I could leave, which would cause a scene of a different kind.
I could stand there and absorb it, which was what I had been doing with my sister for most of my adult life, absorbing things she said and did because she was my sister and the alternative was a conflict I had never believed was worth the cost.
