Every Sunday, my mother-in-law braided my daughter’s hair. I thought it was their special tradition — until I found a folded note hidden between the strands.
The first strip of paper said:
“If Daddy gives Mommy tea in the silver mug, knock it over.”
I read it twice.
Then I sat down on my eight-year-old daughter’s bed because my knees had stopped working.
The shower ran behind the bathroom wall.
On Sophie’s desk, dozens of beads and ribbons glittered beneath the lamp. Mixed among them were six more folded notes.
Some were crisp.
Others were soft around the edges, as though they had been opened and closed many times.
Carried back and forth.
Hidden in my daughter’s hair.
I reached for the second one.
“If Mommy falls asleep on the couch, check that she’s breathing.”
My stomach turned.
The third note was shorter.
“Do not call Daddy first.”
I dropped it.
For several seconds, all I could hear was the shower and my own pulse.
Then I noticed a pale blue bead near the edge of the desk.
It was larger than the others and shaped like a tiny barrel.
A thin seam ran through the middle.
I twisted it open.
Something white fell into my palm.
A pill.
I stared at it until the shower shut off.
The bathroom door opened.
I closed my fist.
Sophie stepped into the hallway wrapped in a towel, her wet curls hanging around her face.
She saw me sitting beside the notes.
Her entire expression changed.
Not guilt.
Fear.
“You read them.”
My voice came out rough.
“What is this pill?”
She looked at my hand and began to cry.
“Grandma said not to let Daddy find it.”
“Why was it in your hair?”
