I thought Cris’ sudden gym obsession was the strangest part of our anniversary trip. Then I saw him whispering with a young dancer and realized our marriage might not survive Mexico
After 20 years of marriage, I thought I knew every version of my husband.
I knew the version of Cris who snored after two beers.
I knew the one who claimed the remote before dinner and fell asleep before the opening credits. I knew the man who could spend an entire Sunday on the couch and call it “recovering from the week.”
What I did not know was the man who went to the gym at 6:00 a.m.
Cris had a comfortable beer belly and an open hatred for physical exertion. He would laugh out loud whenever I suggested we hit a treadmill or take a casual yoga class.
“Yoga?” he once said. “Mel, I pull a muscle putting on socks.”
That was Cris.
He made jokes.
He avoided stairs.
He considered walking to the mailbox a meaningful accomplishment.
So when we checked into an all-inclusive resort in Mexico for our 20th anniversary trip, I fully expected him to spend the week lounging by the pool with a cold drink in hand.
That was the plan, at least.
Our teenage daughter had come with us.
The trip was supposed to be a family celebration with a few romantic dinners mixed in.
We had saved for months.
Cris had promised me sunsets, good food, and absolutely no work calls.
On our first night, we stood on the balcony and listened to music drifting up from the resort courtyard.
“This is perfect,” I told him.
Cris wrapped an arm around me.
“Twenty years, Mel.”
“Twenty years,” I repeated.
