I thought our family vacation would bring my husband and me closer after years of stress. Instead, one decision he made showed me exactly where I stood in my own marriage.
The gate area smelled of coffee and hand sanitizer. I hadn’t sat down once since we’d arrived at the airport. Henry, two, squirmed on my hip while Patrick, five, tried to climb into the stroller. Jasmine, seven, asked for the fourth time how long until we could see Mickey.
A few feet away, their father, Ryan, scrolled through his phone. Martha, my mother-in-law (MIL), stood beside him, one hand pressed lightly against her lower back, as if she wanted someone to notice.
I hadn’t sat down once since we’d arrived at the airport.
“Mommy, is Grandma coming on the airplane too?” Jasmine asked.
“Yes, sweetheart. Remember, we talked about it.”
“But I thought it was just us.”
“Plans changed a little,” I said, and I felt Martha’s eyes flick toward me.
“Anastasia, honey, you’re zipping his jacket up wrong,” my MIL said, gliding closer. “You’ll catch his chin. Here.”
“We talked about it.”
I stepped back and let her fix it because arguing at gate B14 wasn’t a battle I was going to pick.
Ryan held out his half-finished coffee without looking up.
“Babe, hold this a sec?”
I took the cup. He started scrolling through his phone again.

Six weeks ago, this had been a family-of-five vacation.
Just me, Ryan, and the kids. Then Martha “happened to hear” about it at Sunday dinner.
I stepped back and let her fix it.
“Orlando! Oh, how lovely! I haven’t been since Ryan was little! A widow on a fixed income can’t dream about places like that anymore,” Martha had added, dabbing her eyes.
