I’d spent most of my life fixing problems before they became disasters. So, when a young mechanic smiled at my gray hair and treated me like I wouldn’t understand my own car, I let him talk. By the time he realized what I’d kept in my purse, it was far too late.
Kyle, the young mechanic, slid the invoice toward me and tapped the total with his pen.
“Eight thousand dollars,” he said. “Cash or card?”
I stared at the number, then looked through the glass behind him.
My car sat with its hood open, untouched. I hadn’t heard the engine run once since I handed Kyle my keys.
He leaned closer, wearing the same patient smile he’d used all morning.
“I know it’s a shock, sweetheart, but the engine’s finished.”
He’d called me that four times.
Each time, he said it as though my gray hair had erased my name.
I folded my hands over the floral purse in my lap.
“What test showed that?”
Kyle’s smile slipped.
“Then explain it.”
A woman across the waiting room lowered her magazine slightly.
Kyle glanced at her before turning back to me.
“Your engine has lost compression. There’s internal damage. The whole thing needs to be replaced.”
“All four cylinders?”
His eyebrows rose.
“And you tested them yourself?”
He gave a short laugh. “I’m the mechanic.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
His jaw tightened.
I nodded.
Then I asked for the readings.
His confidence changed for only a second, but I saw it. I’d raised three children mostly alone. I knew a lie before it finished leaving someone’s mouth.
Kyle cleared his throat.
“Every one?”
“Every one.”
He pushed the invoice closer.
