PART 2
I stepped out of the shadows.
Ashley turned toward me.
Every drop of color drained from her face.
Emily slowly lifted her head. The instant our eyes met, the heavy pot slipped from her trembling hands and slammed against the concrete floor with a deafening crash.
Before a single word could leave anyone’s mouth, I reached into my pocket… and pulled out something my family never imagined I had.
Not the diamond necklace.
Not yet.
My phone.
The screen was already lit.
Recording.
Ashley’s eyes flickered down to it, and for one brief second, the confident mask she always wore shattered completely.
“Daniel,” she whispered, so quietly that I almost didn’t recognize her voice.
Behind her, the faucet continued running. Steam rose from the sink. Grease floated in cloudy swirls over the dirty water. Emily stood frozen beside it, her red hands curled close to her chest, as if she didn’t know whether she was allowed to move.
That was the part that broke me.
Not the money.
Not the party.
Not even the toast my brother had made in my dining room.
It was the way my wife looked at me with fear first, before relief.
“Turn off the water,” I said.
Ashley blinked. “Daniel, I can explain—”
“I wasn’t talking to you.”
My voice didn’t rise. It didn’t need to.
Emily reached for the faucet, but her fingers slipped. I stepped forward and gently turned it off myself. Up close, I could see the small cracks in her skin, the rawness around her knuckles, the exhaustion gathered beneath her eyes.
“Emily,” I said, my voice softening. “Are you hurt?”
