The second was believing Eleanor would step into the role he had already written for her, the one where she smiled through her own diminishment and thanked him for the privilege.
By the time the chauffeured SUV eased up to the Miami marina, Eleanor had already survived a morning that would have flattened most people. Three calls from Europe, each one delivered in the clipped tones of executives who believed urgency was a personality. Two emergency board approvals that required her signature and her certainty in equal measure. A flight delay that had left her coffee going cold in the cup holder, a small brown ring forming on the surface like something abandoned. She had answered all of it from the back seat with her laptop balanced on her knees, and when the last email sent, she had closed the machine and pressed her fingertips against her eyes until the pressure bloomed into color.
She stepped out into the thick salt air with one suitcase, one tote, and the particular kind of exhaustion that lives behind the eyes and refuses to be slept off. The heat wrapped around her immediately, humid and total. Somewhere a gull complained. The marina glittered with the aggressive brightness of money at rest, white hulls and chrome fittings and glass that threw the sun back at the sky.
This trip was supposed to be different. That was the phrase she had been repeating to herself for weeks, the way people repeat prayers they have stopped believing but cannot bring themselves to abandon. No office. No dashboards glowing red at two in the morning. No security team calling to tell her that another client’s infrastructure had lit up like a warning flare, that somewhere in the invisible architecture of the world a door had been forced and it was her job to close it.
