For years, I believed the little girl I once babysat had forgotten me. Then a sealed package appeared on my doorstep with six words that made my hands shake.
I never had children of my own.
For years, I told people that was by choice. It was easier than explaining the miscarriages, the doctor visits, and the marriage that collapsed under the weight of everything we could not fix.
By 39, I lived alone in a small yellow house with blue shutters, a garden I cared too much about, and a kitchen table that almost never had anyone sitting across from me.
Then Melissa moved in next door.
She was 28, recently divorced, and raising her five-year-old daughter alone.
The first time I met Sophie, she was sitting in the grass between our houses, trying to put a ladybug into an empty matchbox.
“That needs air holes,” I told her.
She looked up at me with huge brown eyes.
“It’s a lady.”
“A ladybug.”
“No. Her name is Lady.”
I crouched beside her. “Lady still needs air.”
She handed me the box.
“Can you make holes?”
That was how it started.
A week later, Melissa knocked on my door before sunrise. She wore a diner uniform and looked like she had not slept in days.
“I’m sorry,” she said. “I know this is a strange thing to ask.”
Sophie stood behind her in purple pajamas, holding a stuffed rabbit by one ear.
Melissa explained that a waitress had quit. Her manager offered her weekend shifts, but she had no one to watch Sophie.
“My sister usually helps,” she said, “but she’s out of town. I can pay you.”
I looked at Sophie.
She lifted the rabbit.
“This is Mr. Pickles.”
