The Driveway A Judge Ordered Cleared

I want to tell you what it sounds like when a jackhammer finally breaks eleven inches of cured concrete apart, because for two weeks that sound was the only thing I let myself think about. Not the lawyers. Not the money. Just that sound, and the look on Daniel Harper’s face when he finally heard it too.

But I need to start at the beginning, because the ending only makes sense if you understand what that driveway meant before anyone decided it belonged to them.

I live on seven and a half acres tucked against the foothills of the Selkirk Range in the Idaho panhandle, the kind of country where the pines grow so tall and so close together that the light comes down in pieces instead of sheets. I bought the place in 2011 with money I’d saved working line crew for the power co-op, back when I still believed a person could work themselves into a quiet life if they were patient enough. Seven and a half acres isn’t a ranch. It isn’t much by some people’s measuring. But it was mine, paid off, surveyed, and fenced, and it had a driveway that had been carved into that hillside since sometime in the late 1980s, long before I ever set foot on the property.

That driveway curved just enough coming up from the county road that you couldn’t see the cabin until you were nearly on top of it, which I always liked. It felt like the land was letting you in slowly, on its own terms. Whoever cut that road originally knew what they were doing, because it ran along the natural fall of the slope so the rain drained off it instead of carving it into a gully. I maintained it every single year of the thirteen I’d owned the place. Cleared deadfall after windstorms. Hauled in fresh gravel every spring. Dug out the culvert when beavers backed up the runoff two years running. It wasn’t glamorous work and nobody ever thanked me for it, because nobody else needed to use it. It was mine, the same way the cabin was mine, the same way the well was mine.
