The three knocks echoed through Emily’s little blue house like a warning.
For one breath, nobody moved.
Noah slept on, his tiny mouth slightly open, one fist curled against the blanket near his cheek. The Christmas lights along the window blinked softly red and gold, their glow falling across the bottles on the coffee table, the folded burp cloths, the half-empty mug of tea going cold beside the couch.

Emily backed toward the hallway with Noah pressed against her chest. “Don’t open it.”

Her lips parted, but only a whisper came out. “Please, Gavin.”
A voice called from the porch. “Emily? I know you’re in there.”
A woman’s voice. Older. Firm.
Emily closed her eyes. Recognition flickered across her face, but it wasn’t relief.
I walked toward the door.
“Gavin, no.”
I stopped with my hand above the lock and looked back at her. Five months ago we had stood in a courthouse hallway with lawyers between us and a silence stretching wider than the life we had lost. I remembered thinking her calmness meant she no longer cared.
