My name is Colette Aldous, and for six years I paid for a house I was not allowed to enter through the front door.
I want to begin there, with the front door, because it is such a small thing and it turned out to hold the whole shape of the arrangement inside it. There was a side door, off the kitchen, that opened onto the gravel where the trash bins were kept, and that was the door I was expected to use. Not by any rule anyone had spoken aloud. Nobody in that family ever said the cruel thing directly. They simply arranged the world so that the cruel thing became the natural thing, and then looked at you with mild surprise if you ever seemed to notice it.
I noticed it. I noticed all of it, for six years. I simply decided, for reasons that had to do with love and with a kind of stubbornness I mistook for patience, not to say so.
I was thirty-four when I married Julian Thorne, and I want to be honest that I married up, in the way the world measures these things, and that I knew it, and that some foolish grateful part of me spent years believing I owed the Thornes something for the privilege. The Thornes were old money in a small city that ran on old money, the kind of family whose name was on a wing of the hospital and a reading room at the library, and Julian was the only son, and I was a woman who had put herself through nursing school working double shifts and had no name on anything anywhere.
His mother, Vivienne, understood the arithmetic of that from the first dinner. She was gracious to me in a way that was worse than rudeness, because rudeness you can name and answer, and graciousness deployed as a weapon leaves you nothing to push against. She would compliment my dress in a tone that established it was not the sort of dress a Thorne would wear. She would ask about my mother’s people in a way that made it clear she had already concluded there was nothing there worth asking about. And she did all of it with a soft smile and a hand laid gently over mine, so that if I had ever objected, I would have been the one who seemed unkind.
