At My Parents’ 40th Anniversary Dinner, My Father …

At my parents’ 40th anniversary dinner…

Dad looked at me and asked:

“Brooke, where did my $200,000 go?”

My sister smiled. I opened my phone. My dad leaned forward just enough for the chandelier light to hit his face.

And I could tell he’d already made up his mind before he even spoke. The room was loud a second ago, full of glasses clinking and people talking over each other. But something about the way he set his napkin down made everything slow.

He looked straight at me, not angry, not confused, just certain. Then he said it like it was the most normal question in the world. “Brooke, where did my $200,000 go?”

For a second, I honestly thought I misheard him.

The words didn’t land right, like they belonged to someone else’s conversation at another table. I felt my shoulders lock up before my brain caught up, and I just stared at him, waiting for him to correct himself or laugh it off. Nobody laughed, not even Uncle Frank, and he laughed at everything.

“I’m sorry, what?” I said, keeping my voice level because I wasn’t about to panic in front of a room full of people who already had opinions about me. Across the table, Madison smiled. Not a big smile, not obvious, just enough that if you weren’t looking for it, you’d miss it.

But I saw it, and it didn’t match the moment. It looked like relief, like something had finally gone exactly the way she expected. My stomach dropped a little.

Dad didn’t look at her. He kept his eyes on me, steady, like we were back at the kitchen table 10 years ago and he was asking me why I came home late. “The transfer,” he said.

“I moved it months ago. Same account you’ve always had access to. I figured you were using it for something important.

But I want to hear it from you.”

Around us, conversations faded out one by one. You could hear forks touching plates, chairs shifting, someone coughing near the back. People weren’t pretending not to listen anymore.
