On the day I was supposed to leave for my vacation, I overheard my daughter-in-law talking to my son on the phone. She was in the living room of my house. I was in the hallway, gathering the last few things before the Uber arrived to take me to the airport.
My suitcase was already by the front door. My purse was over my shoulder. My house keys were in my left hand.
Harper did not know I could hear her. “Perfect,” she said, her voice low and bright, the way people sound when they believe they are getting away with something. “While your mother is away, I’m going to go ahead and move all my furniture into her house.”
I froze.
My purse nearly slipped off my shoulder, but I caught it before it hit the floor. I did not breathe. I did not move.
I stood there in the hallway of the house I had lived in for forty years, listening to my daughter-in-law plan my erasure as casually as if she were rearranging throw pillows. “I already spoke to the movers, honey,” Harper continued. “They’ll be here in two hours.
We’re going to start with the big room. That’s going to be our master bedroom. We’ll move your mom’s stuff to the back room.
It’s smaller, but she doesn’t need that much space.”
The air left my lungs. My own daughter-in-law. In my own house.
Planning to take over my home while I was away. “Don’t worry,” she said. “When she gets back, everything will be ready.
We’ll tell her it was a surprise. That we did it to take better care of her. You know how she is.
She’ll protest at first, but she’ll get used to it.”
Then she laughed softly. “She always gets used to it.”
Those words hurt more than any slap ever could have. She always gets used to it.
As if I were an old chair that could be dragged from one room to another without permission. As if I were a tired piece of furniture that no longer belonged in the center of my own life. As if the house Arthur and I had bought with decades of work and sacrifice was no longer mine because I had become old enough for them to ignore.
