“Go ahead,” Madison said loud enough for the entire Holt family to hear. “If you’re so brave, just leave. You wouldn’t last a week without us.”
Her voice floated above the clatter of forks, above the polite laughter of guests, above the carols humming through the speakers.
And everyone watched me, waiting, amused, expecting me to shrink the way I always had. Instead, I reached for the keys lying next to my plate. The house keys.
The car keys. The keys they thought were theirs. I laid them quietly on the linen cloth, and the click was so soft I almost didn’t hear it.
But Madison did. Her smile froze. My parents stiffened.
And as snow fell softly outside, I stood without saying a word, walked past the tree glowing red and gold, and stepped into the cold night. Behind me, their laughter collapsed into stunned silence. By sunrise, the silence would turn into panic.
I didn’t put on my coat. I didn’t pack a bag. I didn’t take a single thing except my phone and the little envelope my mother had slipped into my hand two days before she died.
“Not yet,” she had whispered. “You’ll know when to open it.”
I never understood why she chose those words or why she looked so serious when she said them, but I thought of them now as I stepped off the porch and let the snow swallow the sound of my footsteps. The house behind me glowed with Christmas lights, warm and curated and perfect, just the way my family liked things to appear.
Inside, I knew my father, Richard, was already frowning the way he always did when I didn’t behave the way he had scripted in his mind. My mother, Claudia, would pretend her wine wasn’t shaking. And Madison, well, Madison had wanted a scene.
She had wanted triumph. She had wanted to see me fold. She didn’t get that satisfaction.
The air burned my cheeks as I walked down the driveway, but the cold felt cleaner than anything inside that house. My breath turned white in the night air, rising and disappearing like ghosts. I didn’t know where I was going.
