My name is Rachel Coleman, and for twenty-eight years, I was invisible in my own family. Not literally invisible, of course. They saw me.
They acknowledged my presence at holidays. They even texted me when they needed something. But in every way that mattered, in decisions, in respect, in love, I simply did not exist.
My older sister Madison was the golden child. Valedictorian. Phi Beta Kappa.
Full ride to Georgetown Law. She clerked for a federal judge, married a cardiothoracic surgeon, and lived in a colonial in Alexandria with their two perfect children. Every family gathering was a celebration of Madison’s latest achievement.
Then there was me. I went to community college, worked retail through my twenties, drove a twelve-year-old Honda, and lived in a studio apartment in a neighborhood my parents called transitional. I was not a disaster.
I paid my bills. I stayed out of trouble. But I was not Madison.
And in the Coleman family, if you were not exceptional, you were expendable. The difference in treatment started early. Madison got piano lessons and SAT prep.
I got hand-me-down clothes and lectures about being more responsible. Madison’s college graduation had two hundred guests and a catered reception. Mine had my roommate and pizza afterward.
When Madison bought her first house, Dad cried with pride. When I finally scraped together enough for a used car, Mom asked if I had considered something more reliable. I stopped competing around age sixteen.
What was the point? But I never stopped paying attention. My grandfather, Dad’s father, was different.
Pop never compared us. He never made me feel small. While the rest of the family fawned over Madison’s accomplishments, Pop asked about my day, my thoughts, my life.
He taught me about rental properties, passive income, and compound interest. He had built a small real estate empire in Florida starting in the 1970s. Ten modest rental houses in Tampa Bay that generated steady income for forty years.
