I accidentally found a hidden camera pointed strai…

I found a hidden camera inside my smoke detector while changing the battery. It was not a cheap little toy camera someone had ordered online and shoved into a corner as a joke. It was professionally installed, wired cleanly, and aimed straight down the upstairs hallway toward my bedroom door.

At sixty-seven years old, living alone on my wheat farm outside Fargo, North Dakota, I could not imagine why anyone would need to watch me sleep. So I did not rip it out. I did not call anyone from my kitchen phone.

I did not tell my daughter. I put the smoke detector back exactly the way I had found it, climbed down from the stepladder, and started paying attention. Three days later, my daughter asked me a question she had no possible way of knowing to ask unless she had been watching.

That was the moment everything I thought I understood about my family began to come apart. The Saturday morning battery check was something my late wife, Helen, started almost thirty years earlier. Twice a year, usually when the clocks changed, she would pull a chair into the hallway, hand me a pack of nine-volt batteries, and remind me that a farmhouse could forgive many things, but it would not forgive carelessness.

Change the smoke detector batteries. Test the carbon monoxide alarms. Check the fire extinguisher by the back door.

Make sure the furnace closet was clear. Helen had been gone four years by then, but I still kept the routine. It was not really about fire safety anymore.

Not entirely. It was one of those small, stubborn rituals that let me feel she had not completely disappeared from the house we built together. That morning, March wind rattled the old cottonwoods along the driveway, and the fields beyond the kitchen window were still brown and hard from winter.

I made coffee in the same dented percolator Helen used to tease me about, pulled my stepladder from the mudroom, and carried it upstairs. I was standing in the hallway outside my bedroom, unscrewing the smoke detector cover, when I noticed the first thing wrong. The weight was off.
