My ex-wife stood in a Collin County family courtroom at 10:47 on a Tuesday morning and told a judge I was not enough of a man to raise my own children. She did not shout. Cordelia had learned, somewhere between real estate luncheons and country club charity auctions, that the cruelest sentences land harder when spoken softly.
She stood beside her attorney in a cream blazer, her wedding ring from her new husband catching the fluorescent light, and spoke in the calm voice she used when she wanted strangers to mistake her for reasonable. “Your Honor, my children need stability,” she said. “They need a real home.

My son, Caspian, was eleven years old. My daughter, Lyra, was nine. They sat on the wooden bench behind me in clothes their mother had chosen the night before.
Caspian wore a navy blazer with sleeves a little too short. Lyra wore a white cardigan buttoned all the way up, even though the courtroom was warm and smelled faintly of old paper, furniture polish, and coffee from the clerk’s desk. Cordelia did not look back at them when she said the next part.

Her new husband, Stellan Hargrove, sat behind her with one ankle crossed over the other, looking like a man who believed square footage was a character reference. He wore a tailored suit, a silver watch, and the satisfied expression of someone who had already pictured my children in the upstairs bedrooms of his five-thousand-square-foot house in Frisco.
Caspian lowered his eyes to the floor. Lyra began to cry. Not loudly.
She had learned not to cry loudly during the divorce. Loud crying made adults pause, and my daughter had already learned that adults hated being interrupted when they were busy hurting each other. A tear slid down her cheek.
