I’ve never gotten along with my ex-husband’s wife. Even after eight years of marriage, her rude and condescending attitude always made family events uncomfortable. So when our 18-year-old son graduated, I asked my ex not to bring her.
I just wanted to enjoy my child’s big day without tension. He agreed — and I felt relieved. But right after the ceremony, my son and his father suddenly turned toward their car.
Confused, I reminded them about the small celebration I had planned at my house. That’s when my ex told me they were going to his home instead. His wife had organized a lavish party to make up for missing the graduation.
Then my son looked at me and said words I’ll never forget:
“You’ll never get over Dad leaving you for her, Mom… and that’s sad. You’re my mother, but she’s been my stepmom since I was ten.”
They drove away, leaving me standing alone in the parking lot, crying.
